It’s December, which can only mean one thing: the countdown to Christmas has begun! We’re extremely excited here at Calico. Our Christmas stock is here, we’ve planned our Christmas party and our Secret Santa. And so, now that we’re all in the festive spirit (even you Scrooges out there – it’s December now, you have no choice!), we’ve rounded up our favourite Christmas trends of this year, hoping to give you some inspiration when decorating your home.

1.       Natural incorporation

Carrying on from the popular autumn trend, nature is a stunning trend this Christmas. From wreaths and pine branches to berries and holly, adding greenery to your home is easy. There is such a range to choose from, and the green hues helps to create a warm atmosphere. It’s an ideal trend for those whose tree doesn’t provide enough foliage, and those who love a rustic look. You can also top with fake snow to add a magic touch. We love these wreaths from Parlane, they come with a bit of sparkle for some added glamour. Available from our showroom.

2.       Animals

Continuing from above, animals are another way to bring the outside in. While traditional seasonal characters remain popular, such as deer and stags, more quirky animals are making their way into the spotlight. Penguins, dogs and unicorns feature a lot in homes now, especially on bedding. It’s a fun way to bring Christmas in for the kids, as they will surely love spotting their favourite animals in their homes.

3.       Classic colour schemes

A classic Christmas scheme never goes out of style. Red and gold appears to be the most popular choice, as it is elegant and can work for any room in the house. Red tablecloths with gold tableware work wonders when sitting down for your Christmas dinner, or even red and gold bedding (Christmas bedding is becoming increasingly popular nowadays) complete with statement pillows. This can also cooperate with the green elements, like the red berries of holly plants. Finish the look with some red ribbon wrapped around your Christmas presents and you have yourself a beautiful Christmas interior.

Another classic colour palette is white and silver. These crisp colours create a fresh Christmas aesthetic that is whimsical and enchanting. This scheme usually includes elements of glitter, which can create that magical atmosphere. You can even add dashes of deep blue, via your baubles, cushions and fairy lights. Candles are great with this look too, as the orange lighting that emanates from them contrasts the cool atmosphere. We have some exquisite silver pieces amongst our Christmas stock, including stars and candles.

4.       Ambient lighting

We are living in an era of fairy lights. They are everywhere nowadays, you can’t scroll through Pinterest or Instagram without seeing at least one set. It all stems from the idea of comfort, low lighting creates a more relaxed atmosphere. They can be wrapped around tinsel, strung up on your tree or placed in mason jars for a bit of DIY. But fairy lights are not the only option. Candles can be just as good, with the added benefit of a little bit of warmth. Warm lighting is now more popular than cold, white lights, again, because of comfort, especially during these colder months. Many Christmas decorations feature small amber lights installed, so you can scatter them about your home, using as many as you like. In our showroom, we have Christmas tree-shaped lights that are battery powered and are small enough to fit in anywhere.

5.       Stars, stars and more stars

Stars are one of the main shapes that are associated with Christmas. They’re everywhere at this time of year – on top of the trees, snowflakes, in the night sky that is now appearing a lot earlier. They are a simple way of incorporating those gold or white lights or can act as statement pieces on your mantelpiece. What can make starry decorations extra special is the added glitter and the materials often used means that when the light shines on them, they reflect it beautifully, really making them shine. There are plenty of stars dotted about our showroom, such as the glittery ones from Parlane.

Christmas interiors are the best kind of interiors in our opinion. Putting them up while singing along to the Christmas songs is one of the best ways to get you in the mood, and it’s incredible seeing how much effort goes into creating a festive home. If you love how Christmas-y your home looks, tag us in your photos so we can see!
